Using Coconut Oil For The Lips: Our Complete Guide

When your lips are dry or chapped, what do you do?

Conventional, shop-bought lip balms provide relief but it’s short lived. Within minutes, you're reaching for it again, and again. Normal lip balms help on the surface but they don't really penetrate the skin and solve the problem. You need a better solution.

Carry it with you and reapply regularly. You can also put a good layer on and gently massage it into the lips when you go to sleep at night.

How To Fix Chapped Lips With Coconut Oil

You can use coconut oil for lips directly and apply when they're chapped or dry but for really amazing results, try the following:

Step 1

First, you want to exfoliate and get all the dead skin cells off the lips. You do this by creating a scrub, mixing 1 teaspoon of coconut oil with 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Blend it into a paste, dab on the lips and gently scrub the lips with small circular motions. When that's done, rinse off and pat dry.

Do this about once a week. If your lips become irritable, you might be overdoing it.

Step 2

Instead of using regular lip balm, apply a few drops of coconut oil directly to the lips as needed.

Step 3

To make an even more effective lip balm that is 100% natural, try the following. Combine 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and ¾ teaspoon of honey. Mix together. Find a suitable container (ideally recycled) and apply to the lips when dry.

Another Idea For Homemade Lip Balm

Coconut Oil, Lavender & Honey

This will make enough for 12 bottles/tubes so ensure you have these on hand before you start.


3 Tbsp Coconut Oil

20 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

½ Tsp Raw Honey

2 Tbsp Beeswax Pastilles

1 Tbsp Sweet Almond Oil


  • Have the tubes ready and open.
  • Slowly melt the beeswax and coconut oil together in a double boiler.
  • Remove from heat and stir in raw honey, essential oil and sweet almond oil.
  • Carefully pour into tubes.
  • Once set, you can close the containers.
  • Feel free to experiment with different essential oils and even add in tints. Use the same basic ingredients and method above.


Some people find that they tend to lick their lips with these balms, especially as they smell and taste so good. This will just make the problem worse. If this happens, use wheat germ oil or more beeswax to reduce this.

As you can see, there are many benefits to using a coconut oil or coconut based lip balm. It’s all natural and you can make it to suit your tastes by experimenting with different essential oils.
